What Is a Globe Map? The easiest way to define a globe map is that it is a round model of the earth that depicts with colorful illustrations, some of the world's features. Cartographers are the artists behind the scenes that design globe maps. These experts work carefully to create an accurate model of the earth.

Types of Globe Maps
Political maps and topographical maps are the two most popular types of globe maps. Political ones show the boundaries of countries, states and other locations. Topographical ones use color and relief to show elevation throughout the world.

Globe maps also come in two main colors. The tan maps have an antique feel and are popular in decorating. "Blue water" maps are the most common and are most often seen in the classroom setting.

The metal ring seen around most globes is called a meridian. Before the introduction of latitude and longitude lines, this was used to help identify positions on the globe. Now it is used primarily for aesthetics and helps in stabilization. Another popular feature is the time dial. It is used to compare time zones across the earth.
