Special Features
Globes are round maps of the earth that are designed with vertical and horizontal lines. These imaginary lines, including the equator and the prime meridian aid in finding any location on the globe. Running East and West is the equator which can be seen on the middle of the globe. From the North to the South poles is the prime meridian which is best known for running through Greenwich, England.

The point at which the equator and the prime meridian intersect is called '0.' From here, numbered lines of longitude increase in 15 degree increments and run parallel to the prime meridian. Running parallel to the equator in increments of 10 degrees are latitude lines. At the intersection of these lines are locations on the globe. One example is Dallas, Texas which is at 33 degrees North latitude and 97 Degrees West longitude. What is the latitude and longitude of your city?

Other Features
Some globes are also equipped with a time dial which is located at the North Pole. This is used to show time zones across the world.

The metal ring that extends across half or all of the world globe is the Meridian. The Meridian was used to find locations on the globe before the introduction of latitude and longitude. Although meridians are not used anymore, many globes still have one to assist in stabilizing the globe.

World globes are equipped with a variety of helpful features. These features will aid your study of our beautiful planet Earth.
